What is Private Medical Insurance
Designed to cover the costs of private medical treatment for conditions commonly known as ‘Acute’ conditions, which include any disease, illness or injury that is likely to respond quickly to treatment. The aim of Private Medical Insurance is to return you back to the state of health you were in before suffering from illness or injury.
As a private patient you can expect to receive prompt consultations and treatment, by choosing who treats you and at which hospital as a result of bypassing NHS waiting lists. You will also benefit from certain luxuries such as the privacy of your own en-suite room with TV and a high quality food menu.
In-patient and Day-patient
It can be easy to get confused with the terms In-patient and Day-patient as they essentially mean the same thing as you will use a hospital bed. If you require treatment and stay over night you will be classed as an In-patient. If you use a bed to recover from minor treatment, but leave to go home a few hours later, you will be classed as a Day-patient.
A Private Medical Insurance plan can be taken out as reassurance that treatment is available promptly and to of a high standard – ensuring you have a stress free recovery. If you are admitted to a private hospital you can expect everything from accommodation, nurses, specialist visits, drugs, diagnostic tests and any aftercare such as physiotherapy to be covered in full by most leading insurance companies.
Out-patient
As an out-patient you will meet with a specialist for a consultation to investigate what is wrong and what treatment you may require, before you are admitted for treatment. This part of the cover will also take place in a private hospital, but you will not be required to stay for a long period of time.
Premiums for private medical insurance differ with regards to the level of out-patient cover you require. With the most comprehensive policies, any out-patient consultation with a specialist along with any diagnostic tests you require will be covered in full.
You also have the option to reduce the level of out-patient benefits you receive, which will also lower your monthly premium. It is also important to be aware that insurance providers may have different levels and prices for out-patient benefits, as some will pay towards your first few visits to a specialist and others will pay a set amount towards out-patient consultations and diagnostic tests.
